Information on SEITAN

SEITAN is an excellent basis for vegetarian starters and main courses as well as wholesome food. Due to its very low calorific value and the complete absence of both cholesterol as well as purines (uric acids) SEITAN is also used for special diets, i.e. for mild diets and the like. Moreover, because of its simple and quick preparation SEITAN will soon become an integral part of gastronomy.

PRODUCTION

SEITAN is a wheat product. From the fully wheat corn the protein (Gluten) is extracted by separating bran and starch. Then, the gluten is cooked in water and soya sauce with several spices.

HISTORY

SEITAN was developed by Zen Buddhists in China and Japan more than 1000 years ago, who used SEITAN instead of meat.

TASTE AND CHARACTERISTICS

SEITAN has a full-bodied, savoury taste and a juicy tenderized consistency. Wheat GLUTEN supplies the body with power, perseverance and vitality, because SEITAN contains a lot of protein (approximately 25 %) but only little fat. SEITAN is satiating without causing feeling too fully.

PREPARATION

SEITAN is already cooked and spiced and, therefore, ready for the diversified preparations. SEITAN is excellently suitable for sauteing, breading, grilling and cooking. Added to sandwiches, salads and soups SEITAN completes the nutrition-conscious menu.

STORAGE

The vacuum-packed SEITAN can be kept well in refrigerators up to 5 weeks. Once opened it should be consumed in the next 4 days. There is no danger of getting salmonellosis as SEITAN is free from any animal protein. For a longer storage SEITAN can be deep-frozen without any reduction of taste and/or consistency.
